The Curious Case of Confounding Variables

This is a heavy topic, but it needs to be addressed. Please only read when you have the bandwidth.

Evidence continues to demonstrate environmental toxicity plays a major role in our neurological functioning and overall health.

This is especially true for those with impaired detox pathways.

“Researchers have developed the first diagnostic test for autism that analyzes environmental exposure history — what researchers call the exposome — to aid in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

StrandDx, developed by New York startup LinusBio, uses a single strand of hair to analyze patterns of hair growth that reflect the history of exposure to metals and other toxins associated with autism and how the body metabolizes them over time.”

“As autism rates skyrocketed among U.S. children over the past several decades, along with concern among parents, much research has turned to investigating the role of environmental risk factors and the role such factors have in compounding underlying diverse genetic factors.”

“Roughly 1 in 30 — 3.49% — of children and adolescents ages 3 to 17 were diagnosed with ASD in 2020, a 53% increase since 2017.”

“The hands-down most important aspect of this study is that children test positive for autism, they are really testing positive for detoxification deficiency. That means their body has difficulty processing different environmental toxins.” — James Lyons-Weiler, Ph.D.

“LinusBio says the test could be a key to diagnosing a range of conditions. Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have explored using the exposome to detect diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, as well as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and certain pediatric cancers.”

There is an important missing variable to this discussion.

Non-Native Electromagnetic Radiation has increased markedly during the same data timeline as these tragic autism statistics.

A 53% increase since 2017!

As we learned in the post about synergistic effects, it is possible the accumulated pollutants in one’s body could create a more harmful reaction in the presence of non-native Electromagnetic Radiation.

Logic suggests this synergistic effect could be stronger for those with impaired detox pathways. This could be especially true in the presence of Wireless Radiofrequency Radiation, similar to a human version of the metal spoon in the microwave, as the body accumulates more metals and pollutants.

This was the case with my neurological challenges, including Sensory Processing challenges. Improvements only became possible after mitigating for Wireless Radiation. This was after many years of trying other approaches to heal.

It would be of value to study the synergistic effects between noted environmental factors, exposures to non-native Electromagnetic Radiation, and neurobiological functioning.

This research could also be conducted retroactively by assessing improvements in symptomatology upon mitigating for non-native Electromagnetic Radiation.

Given the amount of suffering involved with Environmental Illness, this would be a more compassionate and productive approach.

Similarly, when there is a sudden collapse, seizure, or cardiac event, it would be of value to measure the surrounding levels of Electromagnetic Radiation—including Wireless Radiofrequency Radiation—alongside the other factors being considered.

This data could help tease apart confounding variables and assess the relative strengths of any synergistic effects.

Wildlife

It would be similarly helpful to measure Electromagnetic Radiation—including Wireless Radiofrequency Radiation—when there are atypical deaths and/or outbreaks of illness in animals.

As an example, here are recent headlines containing the keywords for Avian flu: https://www.1stheadlines.com/cgi-bin/searchhedsd.cgi?search=avian+flu&action=Search&stype=2

Another recent example includes headlines for sudden deaths of whales and seals.

Let’s consider the widespread outbreaks of Avian flu—commonly referred to as bird flu.

The immediately-asserted cause is a virus, and the observed effect is illness and/or death.

For more information of Avian flu in Montana: https://www.ktvq.com/news/montana-news/avian-flu-spreading-rapidly-across-montana

Are there ANY other variables which could be contributing to this biological phenomenon?

Have any other variables changed rapidly and markedly during the same timeline of collecting data?

In order for cause-and-effect assertions to have internal validity, confounding variables must first be identified, isolated, measured, and assessed.

Otherwise, we are simply assuming the cause with omitted variable bias.

It is essential to measure non-native Electromagnetic Radiation as a confounding variable for sudden death and/or atypical outbreaks of disease.

The components of particulate matter in the air, water, and soil should also be measured and assessed for possible synergistic effects.

What is a confounding variable?

“Confounding variables are a type of extraneous variable that are related to a study’s independent and dependent variables. A variable must meet two conditions to be a confounder:

  • It must be correlated with the independent variable. This may be a causal relationship, but it does not have to be.

  • It must be causally related to the dependent variable.” Source

Why do confounding variables matter?

“To ensure the internal validity of your research, you must account for confounding variables. If you fail to do so, your results may not reflect the actual relationship between the variables that you are interested in, biasing your results.

For instance, you may find a cause-and-effect relationship that does not actually exist, because the effect you measure is caused by the confounding variable (and not by your independent variable). This can lead to omitted variable bias or placebo effects, among other biases.” Source

The Research Silo Effect

One of the challenges with modern science is how it tends to look at issues in a vacuum without regard for confounding variables or overarching synergistic effects.

Statistical equations often replace basic observations and logic.

If Albert Einstein were to fall from heaven or space or wherever and see the current challenges in our society, I imagine he might ask, “Has anyone measured the biological effects of those massive cell towers and antennas? New satellites? Visible metallic air pollution? New medications? Wireless radiating devices carried on the body? The compounding effects of these variables interacting with pollutants inside the body?”

These are basic questions.

Modern science has a tendency to “miss the forest for the trees” with many great minds working in isolated silos. It can take years or decades for these isolated research silos to interact.

By then, the ripple effects of lagging science are usually painfully obvious (e.g., asbestos, lead, mercury, DDT, particulate matter, pesticides, cigarette smoke, artificial fragrances, artificial food dyes, etc.).

This sadly includes climate science, wherein many researchers and experts have not considered—nor heard of—the environmental impacts of non-native Electromagnetic Radiation.

Arthur Firstenberg, independent scientist and author of The Invisible Rainbow, recently wrote a newsletter about the tragic avian deaths on the Dutch island of Texel. This is one of many similar instances over the past few years: https://cellphonetaskforce.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Birds-on-Texel-Island.pdf

Excerpt from Arthur Firstenberg’s newsletter (NOTE the possible connection between wind farms and the unexplained whale and seal deaths above):

Non-Native Electromagnetic Radiation is a confounding variable for our current societal challenges that cannot be ethically eliminated through statistical equations.

At the very least, it deserves to be a part of the discussion on the merits of common sense and current scientific evidence. Source 1; Source 2; Source 3; Source 4; Source 5; Source 6

As a society, we have skyrocketing rates of neurodevelopmental disorders, cardiovascular disease, chronic illness, sudden death, crime, and neuropsychiatric disorders.

We need to become proactive with the variables we CAN change.

Wireless Radiofrequency Radiation is a known biological stressor variable that can be modified back to reasonable levels with collaboration and care.

It is not too late.

It requires our help and awareness.
